Dr. Scott Brannan Talks Venous Insufficiency on Networking Arizona

Dr. Scott Brannan Talks Venous Insufficiency on Networking Arizona

Dr. Scott Brannan sits down with Carol Blonder on the program Networking Arizona to discuss procedures available for varicose veins. The veins are shallow blood vessels that are responsible for returning blood to the heart. The venous return to the heart can be significantly delayed, causing blood to pool in the veins. The result is varicose veins, spider veins, swelling, and the sensation of aching at the ankles and in the feet. These are all symptoms of venous insufficiency.

Venous insufficiency occurs in 3% – 7% of the population in the US. In individuals over 55, the rate of incidents is estimated to be between 25% – 60% of the population. If a person takes their sock off at the end of the day and sees that there are lines imprinted in the skin it means that there is a degree of swelling. The imprints should be similar on each of the legs, but if there is a difference it is an indicator that the side with deeper imprints could have venous insufficiency.

Veins with valves that are not functioning properly become dilated due to venous congestion and valve reflux. The procedure performed by Dr. Brannan for venous insufficiency involves placing a needle into the vein and inserting a wire. Then, a catheter is placed over the wire and the tip is placed below where the superficial venous system meets up with the deep venous system. At that point, a type of glue is used to create a plug within the vein and the tributaries going into that vein. The veins on the surface stop receiving blood and flatten out.

Watch the video to hear Dr. Brannan and Carol Blonder discuss venous insufficiency in greater detail.

"I would have difficulty sleeping... That's gone."

“I would have difficulty sleeping… That’s gone.”

After a year of pain, difficulty taking the stairs, and trouble sleeping, she found relief after treatment at Modern Vascular. Hear from a patient that had a Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) procedure performed to reduce pain from osteoarthritis. GAE is a minimally-invasive procedure, using only light sedation and a needle puncture. Minimally-invasive procedures can have fewer complications and shorter recovery times. This patient shares the story of visiting Modern Vascular in Houston to have a Genicular Artery Embolization performed. Hear what she has to say: “I was unable to descend the stairs without taking one foot at a time and putting it next to the other for probably a year. I’m now able to do that with no effort whatsoever. I would have difficulty sleeping because it wouldn’t matter if I was on my back, my side, or my tummy, it would still hurt. That’s gone away. ” Watch the testimonial video to hear her full story.

Modern Vascular: Company Introduction

Modern Vascular is a national group of affiliated outpatient clinics with a mission to eliminate unnecessary amputations through the early diagnosis and treatment of Peripheral Artery Disease using minimally invasive endovascular procedures.

Amputations that are the result of PAD can be prevented with early interventions. Modern Vascular is dedicated to preserving limbs by eliminating unnecessary amputations. Modern techniques and the expertise of the managing physicians and their staff contribute to exceptional results.

Through the embrace of new technologies in the fields of interventional radiology, interventional cardiology, and vascular surgery, Modern Vascular is able to do things that weren’t possible not too long ago. It’s even possible to open up the arteries in the feet, all the way down to the toes.

Looking toward the future, Modern Vascular aims to grow through partnerships with hospitals in rural areas. Specialized care like the kind that Modern Vascular provides can be difficult to find in those areas, and Modern Vascular believes in providing access to these procedures to all people that could benefit from them.

Dr. Berkowitz on Networking Arizona

Dr. Berkowitz Networking Arizona Interview

Dr. Steve Berkowitz, CMO of Modern Vascular, sits down with Carol Blonder for the radio program Networking Arizona on 1100 KFNX. Dr. Berkowitz describes how his passion for limb salvage and the treatment of peripheral artery disease led him to join Modern Vascular. The procedures performed at Modern Vascular can get people walking again and postpone, or even prevent, amputation.

Peripheral artery disease is caused by the hardening of the arteries. When that happens in the heart, you can have a heart attack. When it happens in the brain, you can have a stroke. In the lower limbs, it can cause extreme pain, a lack of mobility, and it could lead to amputation. Modern Vascular is dedicated to preventing amputation that is caused by peripheral artery disease.

It is already difficult for a person to lose a foot or limb, but it can affect people in many additional ways. There is as high as a 50% mortality rate after 1 year if you have had an amputation. That’s why Modern Vascular is so passionate about repairing the blood vessels early on so that we can slow down, or even avoid, that process.

Many people that have PAD are asymptomatic and may not know that they have it. Oftentimes, by the time symptoms do arise there is already significant disease. The first step is to identify risk factors that put you at greater risk for peripheral artery disease so that you can manage them to prevent the disease from progressing.

Common symptoms of PAD include pain while walking, burning sensations, and as it gets worse the pain may present at night or become constant. When the circulation gets bad you are more likely to ulcers, gangrene, and sores that will not heal

When should you call Modern Vascular? You should consider the risk factors. As people age the likelihood of getting PAD increases. High blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and smoking can accelerate the process of the hardening of the arteries. If you have those risk factors and are experiencing any of the symptoms reach out to Modern Vascular to schedule an evaluation.
