What is PAD – Peripheral Artery Disease?

Peripheral Artery Disease is the narrowing of peripheral arteries due to atherosclerosis (plaque buildup on arterial walls) decreasing blood flow to legs, feet, and toes. Left untreated, PAD complications include critical limb ischemia, gangrene, and amputation.

Risk factors that greatly increase the likelihood of developing Peripheral Artery Disease are:

  • Increasing age
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes

Do I have Peripheral Artery Disease?

Diabetes could potentially lead to neuropathy, which could potentially lead to below the knee amputation. Many people with peripheral neuropathy or diabetes don’t know about PADThis means that they can often miss or confuse the signs, such as:

  • Numbness in the legs
  • Painful cramping in the leg after walking on an incline or climbing stairs
  • Weakness in legs
  • Discoloration of the legs
  • Sores on legs and feet that don’t heal

Left untreated, PAD could result in:

  • The development of foot ulcers
  • Non-healing sores
  • Areas of nerve damage that eventually become dead tissue due to restricted blood flow

This stage of PAD could lead to below the knee amputation.

If you or someone you know is experiencing these signs or symptoms, please schedule a consultation at Modern Vascular.
