Knee pain is a common symptom of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. The cause of osteoarthritis is the wear and tear of the cartilage in the knee joint. This can cause severe pain if the cause is not addressed. The only way to cure osteoarthritis is with a full knee replacement. However, there are other options available to help deal with knee pain. Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a minimally-invasive procedure that can reduce or eliminate knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. GAE is able to reduce knee pain by restricting blood flow to the capillaries of the knee. If blood is restricted to the area then there will be less pain. Minimally-invasive procedures can have fewer complications and shorter recovery times. The GAE procedure only requires light sedation and a needle puncture.
